Schuchmann offers evidence-based expertise on the subject of dynamic standing. This knowledge has led to our latest innovation, the standing trainer trixi.
Standing is a basic human need. Being at eye level with others offers not only social but also therapeutic benefits. Children and young people who rely on seating aids and wheelchairs should break up long periods of sitting with regular standing exercises. This is because sitting for too long is unhealthy and can lead to conditions such as muscle shortening.
It is not necessary to stand for particularly long periods. Simply standing – even for a short time – is enough to prevent health problems caused by sitting. Standing is really good for people and their health: it increases bone density, aids digestion, reduces joint contractures and makes breathing easier.
Shifting your weight onto your legs helps to develop strong and stable joints around the hips, knees and ankles. But standing isn’t just important for health: children are much more alert when standing upright and can take in their surroundings better. When standing, they are always right in the thick of things and can interact with their playmates. If standing trainers have a very small standing area, it is easy for children of all ages to get right up close to their friends or even to a blackboard.
Dynamic standing as a key component of therapy
Conventional, classic standing trainers provide safe, stable standing and fill a major gap in the development of many children with motor development delays. To make standing
more appealing, sustainable and pain-free, incorporating more movement whilst standing can be helpful. Children only stand still and symmetrically for short periods. They constantly shift their weight and use standing as an intermediate position when changing movements. Armed with this knowledge, our team of experts from various disciplines has developed the innovative standing trainer trixi. trixi allows movements around the body’s central axis, thereby training balance, body control and coordination. This range of movement can be adjusted in all directions. The position of the feet is also variable: the feet can be positioned parallel or in a straddle stance – thereby providing further stimuli for motor development. The aim of this standing trainer is therefore to encourage more movement whilst standing.
